LG OLED TVs at CES 2018

Big—though hardly surprising—news at CES 2018: LG OLED TVs are even better than last year!

The introduction of a 77C8P is great news for those hoping for lower 77" WOLED pricing.

But nothing at all about improvements in brightness or color gamut / volume or any of the other fundamental picture-quality attributes?

Any indication whether the 2018 lineup will be making use of a new generation of WOLED panel or is it fundamentally a continuation of the 2017 WOLED penels with a few interesting system-level bells and whistles added?

I think most consumers will go for the C8 as it will offer a difference in processor, using the A9. Disappointed they couldn't offer HDMI 2.1
That would have been amazing. So I think many will wait til 2019, as those models will most likely have HDMI 2.1

No HDMI 2.1 makes the tv obsolete in one year. What a shame things sound half way decent until the No HDMI 2.1 did bit. At least I get to keep my money a little longer. Thanks LG LOL.

Same panel as 2017, so can they get that much brighter than 700-800-ish nits?

No mention in this online-shashkiforum article of that EXTRA SPECIAL 88" 8K LG TV Set that will be at CES this year.

The higher-precision LUT is nice as is the addition of Technicolor HDR, but as CNET has noted, 2018 seems to largely be a rehash of 2017...

Had a feeling the LG 7 series hit a good mark, the additional technical capabilties are interesting and it looks as if the W series will mirror last year in form factor (and speaker bar dongle).

Current:
LG W7 | LG 77G7 | Sony A1E x2 | LG 65G6 | TCL 55P605 | Sony VPL-VW885ES + Panamorph DCR Palladin | Sony VPL-VW675ES | AudioQuest Diamond x3 | UBD-K8500 | OPPO UDP-203 x3 | UBP-X800 x2 | OPPO BDP-105D | ATV x2 | Roku x4 | Sony HT‑ST5000 x2 | Sony HT-ST7 | Pioneer Elite SC-89

So its safe to assume Sony's A1E won't be that much different either. Happy i bought the TCL P as low investment into 4K HDR. I can save up for a major upgrade in 2019.

Did LG say how they were accepting 120 fps if not via HDMI 2.1?

It must be either DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 or via HDMI 2.0 using 4:2:0.

I was expecting this to be LG's big "tock" year in their "tick-tock" development of OLEDs, are they doing a tick-tick-tock method now, or is the tock just not that big of a change?

Idk I mean I remember reading it here, and seemed pretty factual, though I suppose I don't think I have heard it straight from LG's mouth.

Exactly.

In 2018 you can purchase a new TV that does support HFR through streaming and USB or you can purchsse a new TV that does not support HFR at all.

But so far, there has not been the slightest indication that any TVs with HDMI2.1 are launching in 2018...

Since it's the same panel, I still don't see one thousand candelas per sqm. happening. disappointing. any word they improve the color gamut and cover a larger Rec.2020 space? the engadget article was saying there will be better color processing. and what about uniformity? of course they are not going to talk about uniformity issues at CES. we'll only get to know about the uniformity of these TV's compared to last year when the early reports of the models start coming out around april.
I'm not surprised about the lack of hdmi 2.1, it was already known, the chipsets wouldn't have gone into production in time for the 2018 models (the models go into production in 2017). people who were expecting hdmi 2.1 were setting themselves up for disappointment.
