I have this on HD-DVD and never thought it looked all that great. Wonder if there will be a notable improvement.

I have this on BD already and it's not worth a repurchase. It's a decent movie but not worth it. I'll stick with my current release.

I am looking forward to the remaster of the Italian Job and yes it deserves a remastered print. The soundtrack by itself is exceptional.

Holy random. No Untouchables? No Black Rain?

The Italian Job?!?

Just totally unexpected.

Good. After IJ Paramount should take care of Sleepy Hollow. The recent Blu-ray looks horrible.

EDIT: And they should take care of the Tomb Raider movies too.

Agreed.
If they do, I'll buy (I passed on the first release).

Still waiting for Tomb Raider 2! Far superior to the original. People shoot guns and actually get shot! Sorry the A-Team effect of Tomb Raider 1 got annoying.

I've held off on a number of Paramount titles, including ITALIAN JOB, hoping for better transfers - and it looks like somebody over there is finally getting the message that they need to do a better job with their catalog releases. TOP GUN, as good as it sounds, is still my biggest Paramount disappointment in the PQ department -- fully expect a remaster on that one, with the DNR knob dialed-back just a tad.

I'm actually glad to read this. I had that HD DVD of ITALIAN JOB and the picture was horrid and the sound lossy. This along with Face/Off are my two biggest Paramount HD disappointments. Hopefully Paramount will release Face/Off with a properly remastered video AND a lossless audio track.

Yah the HD DVD of this one is pretty lousy. I think I got it as one of my free discs from one of the promotions.

I would purchase a properly remastered Face Off.

The Mission Impossible movies, too. Ditch the MPEG2 video and bring on a lossless track.

I've been wanting to buy the 2003 version of The Italian Job on BD for some time now but the quality of the current release doesn't provide the incentive necessary for me to trade in my DVD and pay to upgrade.

I really like this movie, so I'll probably pick this one up to replace my HD DVD as long as the reviews say the PQ is definitely improved.

I will do the same as geocab. This is a fun movie; I first saw it as an extracted file from satellite TV.

Didnt they use a DI for this movie? Because then it will not get a new transfer, unless we talking about a new 8bit 4:2:0 conversion.

Pfister and Nolan decided early on not to do a digital intermediate (DI) on the show. “We’re both a bit leery of all the hype about DIs,” the cinematographer reveals. “I’d done a little DI work on The Italian Job [AC June ’03] and was not as happy as I hoped I’d be. I found the images picked up a little digital grain when they went through the process.

(scroll down to the last couple paragraphs)
doesn't sound like the whole thing was DI...

I think this is one of those titles that was a victim of being an early blu-ray. I have been holding out for something better, and it looks like it will have payed off.

+1 for the Mission: Impossible movies.

Man, what am I missing here? I love this flick, a really fun and entertaining film. I have the SDVD and the transfer, while not perfect, isn't half bad in my opinion. Then I got the HD DVD version and I think it is an incredible looking disc and about as far from being "horrid" as it can be. I mean c'mon now, "horrid"? Really? As soon as I saw this topic and i read the first couple of posts, I pulled out my HD DVD and fired the A35 up. And as I thought I remembered, it looks/sounds fantastic in my opinion.

Now admittedly I don't have the BD release, nor have I seen it, but if it is as awful as many here say, then a remaster is called for. But I almost find it hard to believe it is as bad as people say after reading those same people saying the HD DVD version is "horrid". However I will admit that another titled mentioned, at least on HD DVD, could be better and that is 'Face Off'. I can only hope that the BD would look better.

All of this, to me, is really moot because if/when I do finally get into BD I won't be buying what I already have on HD DVD. And I am not here advocating one format over the other. But I did want to comment on what I see and ask what I may be missing because these posts just don't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I haven't popped the disc in my HD DVD player since it first came out, but when I reviewed it a few years back -- when my standards were a lot lower, even -- I thought it looked pretty mediocre. Heavy edge enhancement, middling detail, pretty soft overall, more speckling than I would've expected..."horrid" might be an exaggeration, at least with the way I was looking at things in 2007, but I definitely wouldn't call it "incredible".
