Well I picked up an original XBOX for $30 and everything works except that the drive tray is a little "iffy". At first it would not eject at all but once I popped it free with a screwdriver it ejects just fine. Now the issue is that the tray will not close without a slight nudge to push it closed.

So my question is this: Is there anyway to use a standard "off the shelf" dvd drive as a replacement? I am willing to go as far as a "softmod" for now but I really want to spend as little $$ as possible (remember it only cost me $30 to begin with).

Thank for the help.

In a word, no.

You can replace it with an xbox-specific drive, usually on ebay.....Thompsons are the cheap and unreliable ones that everyone wants to replace...then come the other manufacturers with Samsung xbox drives the hardest to find, and most reliable.

probably the cheapest option is just to get another Xbox. That's what I did. Mine had the same issue with the drive not opening. I just recycled that Xbox and got another one for 25 bucks.

I replaced a Thompson drive that was acting up with another Thompson drive and... It almost immediately started acting up too. You'd be much better served getting one of the other drives that were put in the later Xbox models, if you have a choice.

A PC drive won't read Xbox game discs. A PC drive also requires some alterations on the interier to get the fit right. It's not that it can't be done, but in most situations both of these are very undesirable consequenses.

Samsung and Phillips drives, with Samsung being the better choice for most people, are the names you'd want to go with if you buy an ebay drive. I just got a whole new Xbox for $35 so I don't know it's worth it as those drives cost about that.

Modded the unit last night actually has a Samsung drive in it my friend said the tray is probably slightly misaligned so I may try to manually relign it sometime this week.

Softmod it with a bigger harddrive, drop all your games to the HDD and never deal with the DVD drive again.
