So when I moved Directv put in a swm powersupply and splitter but I have no idea why it is wired the way it is.

Here is the connections:
Switching Power Supply
SWM connected to an out on the splitter
IRD connected to the cable that runs to my living room HD Sat box

SWS-4 splitter
Feed from the dish connected to the in on the splitter
Out connected to IRD on power supply
Out connected to master bedroom tv
Out connected to gameroom tv
Out connected to office tv

Not knowing how the siwtching power supply works I would think that the sat feed would connect to the SWM on the power supply. The IRD would feed the in port on the splitter. The the living room, master bedroom, gameroom, and office cables would all be connected to the out ports on the splitter.

Additionally I have 4 other rooms that I would like to get service to and just move a sat box there when needed. Would I be able to just put in an SWS-8 in place of the SWS-4 or do I need to get an SWM-8? The SWS-8 is $20 versus the SWM-8 cost of $230-ish.

Take a look at this site

it all seems easy but a wrong connection could be bad for the components

there are wiring diagrams and such on that site
