Recommend Tuner for 2016 Vizio M or P series

Hi all,

Does anyone have recommendations for a well-built over the air (OTA) tuner that plays well with the new 2016 Vizio M and P series tvs?

Thanks

They don't come with a built-in ATSC tuner?

That's a shame. So if the new owner wants an ATSC tuner for OTA or even cable, they have to shell out a few more bucks which whittles away at whatever the price point is. Interesting marketing decision. It can't cost them that much to include a tuner, especially for a Vizio. Oh well.

I believe if has to do with tax.. If they don't include the tuner, they can import it as a monitor and save the tax money. If it includes the tuner then it gets taxed as a TV. I'm not the expert here, but that is my guess.

This one on Amazon is probably as good as any built in tuner that a TV manufacturer offers, plus it is a DVR if you add a hard drive

Otto, I think just and you are both right. I don't know how many people use OTA and an Antenna, probably those close to the towers.
Cord cutters l would think want the ATSC tuner.

Looks pretty good but has anybody actually used it with the Vizio? I found a request for the Vizio app to support Tablo. I found nobody who actually used it.

Is Chromecast compatible with Smartcast?

I found another place where it said the Google Cast HDMI dongle does not work well with 1080i.

I'm sure somebody here will try it. And report to us... I hope.

No. You would have to use an external antenna just as you would for the TV. That box would just plug into an HDMI port and you would have one more remote to deal with.

Keep in mind that using an antenna (I've been OTA only for over 40 years) depends on location and other factors. Some have luck using one indoors or in the attic but the best possible reception is rooftop about 30'AGL.

My guess is that Vizio feels that OTA is dying (which it is) so why incorporate a technology that most don't care about. I think that's a mistake because a lot of people just assume that the tv comes with a tuner, unless the box and/or setup instructions clearly state that an ATSC tuner is not included. OTA is still going to be around for a long time, especially for the folks who live in an area with great reception. I live about 50 miles from the tower and I've got dead-on-balls LOS so reception for me is perfect. Between OTA and streaming, either from my AppleTV or the computer, I don't need a paid service.

Before you do anything, start with this site and determine what will work for you. everything depends on distance from the TV transmitter and your terrain.

Most of the posts were on OTA reception and a My Cousin Vinny quote. Just looking to see some thoughts on the Amazon tuner linked. Or some thoughts on other models in the same price range.

based on my experience with the Samsung JS9500 and Sony 930 the hardware struggle trying to handle any multi task and you get a lot of reboots or freeze.

could be that Vizio is avoiding those issues.

Sometimes I had to unplug those displays or do factory resets.

Were all going to need a new external box in a year or two when ATSC 3.0 goes live. I'm currently using my TIVO Premier for OTA and DVR duties.

Only one suggestion? I am also looking for a tuner for ota tv signal. My antenna in the attic picks up all the local channels in hd so all I need is a tuner for this vizio display. Anyone out there tried any other tuner that makes this vizio display look good?

Here's an edited version from a post i made over in the DVR forum that may have useful ATSC Tuner Info. You don't have to use the DVR function, but most seem to come with it anyway. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a decent basic ATSC tuner with HDMI output.

There are a lot of cheap High Definition Digital Tuner boxes w/basic DVR functions to choose from. Several months ago i looked into these for an elderly aquaintance of mine who'd recently discontinued cable service and turned-in his cable DVR, but found himself having withdrawals not being able to record his shows over his roof antenna, and he couldn't afford an OTA Tivo or the monthly subscription fees.

I sent him a bunch of Amazon links to various units to choose from (i'll find the old email and paste the links below). I did tell him to pick one that had the ability to schedule future recordings since i came across some that only recorded real time and had no menu function to set up a future recording. Other points that came up in reviews were stuff like (A) some remotes are laid out better than others, (B) some are able to watch a previously recorded program while simultaneously recording a broadcast, (C) they run hot and units that have a built in power supply might be more prone to heat related failure compared to units that have an external power supply brick in the cord (like with a laptop), (D) some can record basic cable while others cannot. Things to consider if any of them apply to her situation. He did end up buying one from my list, but i don't remember which one he got. He said he connected an external hard drive and is scheduling future recordings and it was working great. And the 1080i OTA signal is better picture quality than the HD signal from his old cable company. He has it connected to an older LCD TV via HDMI.

Hi,

I'd like to continue this discussion if I might. I currently subscribe to Mediacom cable, but have never used the "cable box" nor paid for the monthly rental (approx. $10/month). My current TVs do have tuners and can acquire the digital cable channels, most of which are placed in the 51-xx to 56-xx range. I assume when I switch the TV's setting of input from antenna to cable, the TV tuner "looks" at different frequency range for channel acquisition. The acquired channels are "standard" def content. There is another range of channels available which are the "Hi-def" equivalents (some additional channels are available as hi-def only).

I am also looking at the Vizio display for the next TV, but realize I need something that can tune to the cable channels -- and preferably not shell out $10/month to do so. Does anyone know of a tuner I can buy which will acquire the "standard def" cable channels? How about the "hi-def" cable channels?

There's a possibility of going the streaming route, but that will chew up a lot of data as well on a limited internet plan.

thanks,

Dave
